Appreciation

The quarter is winding down and projects are coming due. Many students have multiple page papers and presentations to put together and are dreading it (I know, I was in that group). But the more of these projects I've done, the more confidence I have that the skills I'm learning will translate to a work skill. I appreciate the skills that I've had to learn from these papers and projects. Public speaking is one of the scariest events a person goes through, even scarier than drowning. But, when you are in a career, you are more than likely going to have to give a presentation, work in a team, and prepare a report. Doesn't that make you appreciate the chance to practice and hone these skills in a class room and receive feedback instead of in front of your supervisor?

Choices

Life is a series of choices. What do you want to do with your life? Where do you want to live? Being a student is a great chance to ponder these choices and map out some ideas. There are plenty of resources at Sullivan to help with that. The teachers have the experience to tell you what you need to know and will be expected to know in career situations. Career Services will help craft a resumé that will help you get noticed and sharpen your interview skills. Taking advantage of these resources is up to you, do you want to make the most of this opportunity? How far are you willing to go to reach your goals?

Every decision has a price tag, can you afford not to?

Belle of Louisville Cruise

I am very excited about tonight, because tonight is the the cruise on the Belle of Louisville hosted by Sullivan University. Each student could get four tickets to bring family or friends, and my tickets have been in high demand. I am bringing my husband and two of my friends and we are looking forward to tonight. It looks like the weather will be perfect, warm and no rain. Food and soft drinks will be served, and I have heard that there will be a DJ as well. What I like about the Belle is that you can either stay in the main dining room and listen to the music, or you can go outside and enjoy the fresh air and view. This cruise will be so much fun for everyone.
I better start getting ready, as it is already 5 p.m. and boarding starts at 7 p.m. I don't want to miss the cruise!

Here is a photo of the Belle from last week, as seen from Rocky's in Indiana:

Etiquette Dinner

The annual Etiquette Dinner hosted by Sullivan University at Gardiner Point Residence Hall was once again a huge success. Here is the menu:

The food was delicious and we learned how to eat the dishes on the menu, how to use your silverware the correct way, and general table manners that will be helpful when invited to a business dinner with your boss.
Here are some photos from that night:

The beautiful table setting:

The first course, which was a shrimp cocktail.

The main course, sliced beef tenderloin with bernaise sauce,
chive whipped potatoes, and asparagus with lemon zest

Here's a photos of the hall set-up, you can see the tables and the screen where Kim showed videos.

It was a wonderful night with great food, great company, and great conversation. I am so glad that I was able to attend, and that Sullivan plans activities like this for students and allumni.

Testing Your Skills

Many times in class when approaching a new medium if is normal to fell uneasy, but in my experience I have always found new challenges fun! This past quarter I have accomplish many new types of classical pastries and of course showpieces! My favorite so far has been sugar and pastiage which is a sugar dough. I also loved working with another sugar dough call gum paste! My partner and I made one amazing team combining our skills and creative ideas and here is some examples of what we accomplished in our new challenges.

Here are a couple of my solo pieces I worked on including a fat sculpture of one of my favorite characters from a tv show and my competition piece.

Faceing challenges is all apart of life and you will never know what your are capable of until you try. If you want to learn more about the mediums I have shown here, go to plus friday and ask a chef instructor in the bakery for guidance.

Have fun and be safe!

Memorial Day

Memorial Day may be over (and I hope you all had a great one) but I wanted to stress the importance that yesterday symbolized.   Sure, all us students, here at Sullivan, loved our 4 day weekend, and lots of us enjoyed days by the pool or BBQ spending time with family and friends, but what Memorial Day is actually about is remembering those who have served, fought and died for our country.

I come from a military family.  My great grandfather fought in WWII, grandfather was in the Navy, father was in the Air Force, uncle was in the Army, and my boyfriend is a Marine.   To say that military pride runs in my veins is an understatement.  So days like Memorial Day and Independence Day mean a lot to me, but so does every other day of the year.  For those of us who live everyday with the nagging thought that today may be a soldiers last day. Or the last time that soldier will see their families for a year.  It's not an easy life, for any involved, but that is the cost of the freedom that you and I enjoy everyday.

Here is my thank you, to those who have given up so much to give me such a good life:

To my fellow Sullivan students, who have finished their time in the service and are now furthering their education, to one of our TA's who is currently at Sullivan on loan from the Army, and to all those reading this who are, or know, military personal.

So even though Memorial Day is over, lets keep those who serve our country in our thoughts and good graces.

Cherry Pie!

It's almost summer, ladies and gentlemen! And with summer comes all American favorites, like apple and cherry pie! My group mate and I made a cherry pie last week in Baking Fund. It was the first lattice top pie he had ever made! We were both really proud of how it turned out!
Finished weaving

All trimmed up and fluted

Ice Carving

To say we learned about carving ice & we made fried ravioli with fried vegetables. I got to say its the first time I have ever held a chainsaw. Scary but fun at the same time, they weigh about 9 pounds. It was very fun we carved a swan . We also made food. We made the pasta from scratch and the rolled it out and stuffed them with some homemade sausage we made earlier in the week. This week was really interesting and I learned a lot.

I am so excited to now be officially employed at Heitzman Traditional Bakery and Deli on Shelbyville and Hurstbourne Rd. It is such a good experience and I'm getting accustomed to it pretty well. I have already gotten to start decorating cookies and I watch the cake decorator do her thing everyday. There is so much potential for me there and it is exactly the kind of place I would like to open someday. It also puts me in a happy mood because of getting to talk to customers everyday. I also move out of the dorms at the end of this quarter and into an apartment with my best friend and my cat! I can't wait, I feel like such an adult now!! Plus, I'm having so much fun with artisan breads this quarter. Today we started on our dead dough piece which is basically a sculpture made of bread. I am creating an owl. Life is going just the way I had planned it to for now, in fact it is even better then I thought it would be by just the end of three quarters! I get to order my blues soon, which will be chef whites with my name embroidered on them and a new blue cap. Scheduling for next quarter happens this Friday! Everything is going so fast!!
