Full House at Open House!

          

Saturday, February 22nd, Sullivan University hosted an open house for potential future students! The day began with myself and the other Ambassadors escorting the attendees to registration in the

A La Carte Café, followed by a short introductory speech and the breakout into our workshop groups. Each group participated in a Baking workshop, in which they decorated cupcakes and made chocolate dipped strawberries. They also participated in a Culinary workshop, where each person was able to roll sushi. Everyone who came also learned about the Hotel & Restaurant Management, Event Management & Tourism, and Hospitality Management. there was then a final meeting in the  A La Carte Café, and an optional Gardiner Point tour for whoever wanted to. Overall the Open House was a pretty successful day!

PIZZA Day !

Omg for the very first time I can say my pizza making was a complete success. Fermenting the dough was the easiest part. The toughest part was spreading the doguh wide enough for it to be a complete pizza . Cant even tell you how fun it is to make a pizza, just try it. I made 6 pizzas in one day and what I thought was the worst thing ever turned out to be the best.. well lets just say I even got to dropp a fully cooked pizza but I still had 5 left . No worries. Spreading the toppings was the biggest creation yet we had so many choices but who was going to eat all that pizza. At least I learned how to make a pizza from scratch !!

The Residence Hall

If anyone is out there is wondering about life at the Sullivan Residence Hall, I can tell you a lot about it. It's really nice getting to meet all of the people that you are starting college at the same time with. There are all sorts of get-to-know-you games and socials that you can choose whether or not you want to participate in. Also, you have tons of people that will help you with homework and study with you and you can walk down the hall to hang out with a friend instead of driving to their house. There is a variety of food available for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, along with a store where you can get snacks and drinks. There is a place to study if you need to print something on the printer or you are having computer troubles. Laundry is free and there are places to hang out and watch TV while you wait for it to finish. The dorm rooms are huge since the residence hall used to be a hotel, and every room has its own bathroom. I've also never run out of hot water and I rarely have any Wi-Fi problems unless they are doing some sort of work on it. There is also a shuttle system from the Residence Hall to the different parts of the Sullivan Campus so you don't have to use your gas or car going to and from school. I think it's a really great decision to live here, especially just for your first few quarters. It's a great way to integrate yourself into Sullivan society!

January Tidings

Snow Days! January has been full of snow and chilly weather. It is not a great idea to run around in the icy weather so I hope that everyone can find fun things to do inside.

Crayon art
 is a great I idea as a kind of messy art project! All you need is some stiff cardboard or foam board and hot glue broken crayon bits and then take a blowdryer to the piece and they melt into crazy shapes and patterns. After you blow the wax the way you like stop the dryer and the wax hardens in place. Voila, unique art.

Another idea for snowy days is homemade fingerprints! 2 tablespoons sugar
1/3 cup of cornstarch
2 cups water
1/4 cup dishwashing soap
food coloring
Put the sugar and cornstarch in a saucepan and then slowly mix in cold water. Then cook the mixture over low heat for 5 minutes, stirring constantly until you have a smooth gel. Let cool and then add dishwashing soap. Divide into as many containers as you would like colors and then mix in food coloring drops until you have you desired color. If you have colored dishwashing soap that can influence all the colors you try to create, which isn’t always a bad thing.

One last idea is make silly putty, because who doesn't love some silly putty!
Color some Elmers glue with food coloring then add some liquid starch. Stir and let it sit for about 5 minuets. Pull the putty out of the bowel onto a paper towel and knead for 5 to 10 mins.

BAKING

Last week we baked all sorts of bread, I got to say for my first time kneading bread It turned out pretty awesome. I have Chef Turner we made whole wheat loaves, egg bread, biscuits, and white bread. OMG all that bread is going to make me so fat lol. Believe it or not bread is one of my favorite things to eat. Also not to mention the bakery has all kinds of sweets and because I have morning class its so hard to not have my teeth fall out cause I haven't ate breakfast yet. I look forward to walking to the bakery every day because of the great aromas that come out and all of the beautiful breads and sweets. My point to you is that you should go to the bakery sometimes its inexpensive and its well worth it!

An Itch to Travel!

I am finishing up the last few quarters of my Hospitality Management degree.  I am currently taking two online classes that are very interesting:  Gastronomic Tourism and International Travel and Tourism.  Both classes, obviously, discuss the many facets of traveling.  I have lived in Louisville since I was six years old, and while I love this city, I have been aching to get out of Louisville!  I need to travel for two reasons: first, to expand my horizons and my experiences by taking other regions and cultures; second, to venture into other culinary worlds.  I am really enjoying the first part of this quarter; these classes allow me to brainstorm on where I want to travel, why I want to travel, and what I hope to achieve or obtain from traveling.

I love attending a university with such interesting, fun, and useful classes...even electives!  Best of luck to everyone this quarter!  Remember:  You only get out what you put it!

January musings

Well everyone, time has sure flown by this quarter and school is almost at mid-terms already. We've endured some brutal, freezing cold, but the weather will brighten up and start to get warmer in February. So keep your chin up and keep plugging along. I know it's been hard at times, but things do get better.

I've been an ambassador now for almost six quarters - started in my second quarter during my bachelor's program and it has been a great experience. I've had the opportunity to meet some pretty great people and work with them, as well as some awesome students. I'd also like to mirror what another ambassador said this month: If you have the opportunity to become an ambassador, do it - its a worthwhile experience with lots of challenges and rewards. I also want to take a moment and talk about school programs. Sullivan offers some great programs for its students and they're all worth participating in. There's the Student Veterans of America, the Student Activities Committee (which is similar to the student council everyone had in their high school), Phi Beta Lambda (one of our fraternities), the Drama and Writing Club, and the newly formed Movie Club. Meeting times are posted near the cafeteria and the hallway and each group has something special to offer students. An added advantage of being in them is they also carry over to your resume and give you additional skills employers are looking for.  Hope to see you at some of the meetings!
