An Itch to Travel!

I am finishing up the last few quarters of my Hospitality Management degree.  I am currently taking two online classes that are very interesting:  Gastronomic Tourism and International Travel and Tourism.  Both classes, obviously, discuss the many facets of traveling.  I have lived in Louisville since I was six years old, and while I love this city, I have been aching to get out of Louisville!  I need to travel for two reasons: first, to expand my horizons and my experiences by taking other regions and cultures; second, to venture into other culinary worlds.  I am really enjoying the first part of this quarter; these classes allow me to brainstorm on where I want to travel, why I want to travel, and what I hope to achieve or obtain from traveling.

I love attending a university with such interesting, fun, and useful classes...even electives!  Best of luck to everyone this quarter!  Remember:  You only get out what you put it!

January musings

Well everyone, time has sure flown by this quarter and school is almost at mid-terms already. We've endured some brutal, freezing cold, but the weather will brighten up and start to get warmer in February. So keep your chin up and keep plugging along. I know it's been hard at times, but things do get better.

I've been an ambassador now for almost six quarters - started in my second quarter during my bachelor's program and it has been a great experience. I've had the opportunity to meet some pretty great people and work with them, as well as some awesome students. I'd also like to mirror what another ambassador said this month: If you have the opportunity to become an ambassador, do it - its a worthwhile experience with lots of challenges and rewards. I also want to take a moment and talk about school programs. Sullivan offers some great programs for its students and they're all worth participating in. There's the Student Veterans of America, the Student Activities Committee (which is similar to the student council everyone had in their high school), Phi Beta Lambda (one of our fraternities), the Drama and Writing Club, and the newly formed Movie Club. Meeting times are posted near the cafeteria and the hallway and each group has something special to offer students. An added advantage of being in them is they also carry over to your resume and give you additional skills employers are looking for.  Hope to see you at some of the meetings!

Back to School

Finally, with all these snow days it makes me miss school more often. I like snow but not when it affects school. I don't know why it makes me miss Sullivan more but I think its because it makes me have to cook at home when I love cooking at school. Sullivan has taught me how to prepare myself for cooking whenever I'm not near school. There's nothing I love more than cooking. I'm so glad were back at school!

Chef Shadow Day

I worked with the bakers for chef shadow day and it was great! I met a lot of high school girls that were really interested in coming to Sullivan and I talked to some of them one on one about how to make an easy transition and get adjusted here as quickly as possible. Most of it came down to using your resources. There are scholarships available from lots of companies and high schools out there that Sullivan accepts. Get involved in your school's A+ Program and take as many AP classes as you can to get some credits out of the way. Talk to some current students to see if you can buy their used books or check out some used books on Amazon once you find our your books' ISBN numbers. Become an Ambassador or Room Advisor at the dorms to get scholarships throughout college. There are so many resources out there to make college more affordable and easier! After talking through this some of the girls were a lot more confident in coming here. Plus, they got to watch and help Chef Straw make some scones and biscuits and then join the Culinary side to partake in some Asian cuisine. If you haven't gotten to shadow a chef yet that is definitely something you should sign up for.

Alexis Adddison First Blog

I attend Sullivan University, my name is Alexis Addison. I am in my 2nd quarter here and it is absolutely great. Although I have previously attended three classes at Sullivan prior to attending here while I was in high school. I am here for Culinary Arts, I make lots of food everyday, this quarter is so much sweets because I am in baking. Sullivan has a great culinary program, you get to explore different foods from all over the world and country. The Sullivan community is great and the students and teachers here don't single anyone out they make you feel welcome. I remember starting my first day here during jump start I was so nervous because it was the first day of college while I was in high school. Let me tell you I was so nervous but the teacher I had made us play this get to know your classmates game and I got to say I was not nervous anymore, actually because out of that game I got a person who is now my best friend here at Sullivan. Sullivan is a great university and if I was allowed to rate it I'd rate it 5 stars not for cleanliness but because of there teaching and school ethnics here.

Second Quarter

I've officially started Baking and Pastry which is what I'm majoring in. So far we have learned a few different ways to make things with puff pastry. We've made cream horns, apple turnovers, vol au vent, bouchee, and cheese straws. I think I'm going to have to start getting back into my running routine. It's all so good! But there are lots of people around to help me eat it. I really like my teachers this quarter too. Some of them I was really afraid of at first because of what I had heard, but everyone has their own teaching style that they learn best from and I like all of theirs. The cold here makes it pretty awful to walk across the street to the bakery everyday, but thankfully I have made friends in my classes who drive me over there. I think this will be a pretty wonderful quarter of sweets!

Graduating

It's the beginning of a new year! This quarter will be pretty difficult for me. I will be taking statistics! I'm excited to graduate this year with my bachelors degree in business! I've had such an exciting journey at Sullivan and leaving will be bitter sweet. In August, I move to Honolulu Hawaii. I have started looking into their graduate school for economics but I really wish I could continue my education with Sullivan. Over the years I have attended this great school I have learned so much and have became close with many faculty members. I am excited to see where the rest of my education takes me.

Switching majors

This was a very hard quarter for me personally, after struggle the previous quarter as well I decided I needed to make some changes. I decided to change majors from Business Management to Marketing. Although the two degrees are very similar a few of the classes I knew I would struggle though and dislike then changed to classes I knew I would be able to enjoy and be successful in. This was a very hard decsion and caused alot of stress on me but with the help of proffessors and staff at Sullivan, I got through it and am so glad I made the decsion. -Bryce Phillips
